Bittersweet history of an industry which fueled globalisation from the times of the Atlantic triangular trade, through the continental blocus of Napoleonic era to nowadays' neoliberal wars. The collective exhibition "Sucre de l'est" sketches a kaleidoscopic, hybride panorama with sugar cane plantations of the former sugar islands, factory ruins of the so called post-socialist area, green fields of boosted monocultures, picket lines and ziggurats of sugar cubes. The battle of the continental chubby beet and the scrawny cane of the colonies depicted by Honoré Daumier in 1838 on the pages of the satirical magazine Le Charivari constitutes the starting point of the research stretching through centuries. The works in the exhibition question the discrepant contentions of imperialism, the "laissez faire" of the mighty, the ideology behind the trade of sweating sweetness.
